The server is aimed at serving a great deal of broadly popular modern web platforms/operating systems such as UNIX, Windows, Linux, Solaris, virtual domains, etc. Apache also supports plug-in modules for extensibility. Apache is free software, distributed by the Apache Software Foundation that sponsors various free and the sole purpose of providing a protected and extensible server platform that confirms HTTP service delivery in accordance with the present HTTP principles.
Most of the modules come as part of the Apache distribution, making the server brag a wide range of aptitudes, such as support for CGI (Common Gateway Interface), a standard protocol for communication between external application software and a web server, and also SSI (Server Side Includes), a simple server-side scripting language. Other Apache modules include: anonymous user access, CGI scripts execution, caching proxy abilities, user authentication, URL redirection, automatic directory listings, support for HTTP header meta files, user home directories, support for loading modules, content negotiation, server status display, etc. Users can choose to install those modules with the Apache server installation. If not, they can install them later with the help of dynamic modules.
